Mamma Maria tending the salt by eleanor

Mamma Maria tending the salt

At Baleni, near Giyani in Limpopo province, South Africa, Mamma Maria and other Tsonga ladies make salt in a traditional process that goes back over 2000 years. Salt is harvested from encrusted sand near a geo-thermal hotspring. It's leached through clay filters, and here you see the water been boiled to evaporation. Hard, hot work.
