Sheepfold on Crowhow End by ellida

Sheepfold on Crowhow End

This rather derelict structure can be found near the Hard Knott Roman Fort.

Sheepfolds are small gathering areas made of dry stone walls that farmers have used down the centuries to corral sheep and pen them together. The earliest sheepfolds date back hundreds of years but modern farming practices have meant that they are now rarely used. However their impact on the rural landscape continued down the years and remain in situ, albeit with many in a ruined state.

In the mid 90's "Sheepfolds" became a Cumbria County Council major countywide sculpture project created by the internationally acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy. The project began in January 1996 and continued until its official conclusion in April 2003 having achieved 46 folds.

Interesting information, I would never have guessed what they were for, but will be able to impress if ever I come across one now. There is an awful lot of stone there, hard work to build it.

@suzanne234 Thanks Suzanne. I don't know Lincs. at all, but all around me, these stone walls trace patterns across the countryside. It astounds me when I think of the man-hours expended in this task.

@merrelyn @ellida Thanks Merrelyn and Terry, I'll confess that this subject was not the one I planned to take that day. It's up on the summit of Hard Knott and I was after the views ...but the rains came down. So, plan B!!
