Today is the Winter Solstice which is celebrated in Penzance by the Montol Festival. Although there are events throughout the day, the most impressive are at night when lit torches are paraded through the town along with people carrying homemade lanterns.

This is at the end of the earlier procession and shows a 'guiser' (man in a mask and disguise) passing in front of the burning of the ‘sun resplendent’ - a large paper star created to represent the mid winter fire.
