22nd November 2018

Oh what a day - in excess of 13,000 footsteps along with a journey involving 8 trains and 2 buses which took us over 200km each way to Colditz Castle in Saxony!

The trains were as efficient and well timed as I had expected and my long planned itinerary worked perfectly albeit with a little stress on the way back to a place called Bad Lausick but there was an entire 3 minutes to kill before the train to Leipzig arrived.

Colditz Castle is as intimidating as you’d expect based on its history although not as grey as it has been rendered and painted cream since 1945. Steffi our guide was excellent and showed us all the escape tunnels and even the escape glider or at least a replica. It really was fascinating and in the end the extended 2 hours tour became almost 3 hours.

It was well worth the months of planning and worry - a great day although again, the weather was consistently around 0 degrees and it even started to snow at one point making it even more bleak.

We ate in our suite tonight - pasta, salad and good red wine for €2.75 a bottle... and there’s a dishwasher!
