23rd May 2013

This is my second visit in two weeks to the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park. This is a local beauty spot that is renown for the amazing floral displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias in the Spring. The display normally peaks in mid May but this year it is quite a bit later.

I have been visiting to get the perfect picture for another of my local greeting card range. Today the flowers were beautiful but... they need about another 5 days or so for all to open. There are still green patches amongst the display! So I will be going again next week and keeping my fingers crossed that the high winds we are forecast for tomorrow do not ruin this stunning display.

As an aside, this is a wildlife haven, during our visit we saw squirrels, ducklings, an adult fox and a greater spotted woodpecker to name but a few. At one stage it felt like we were in Doctor Doolittle film!!
Gorgeous, Emma! I was looking at rhododendrons today, and here too they are not all out yet.

Great job of getting the shadows and light without the light burning out the spots they hit. I often have difficulty with this. The greens in the background are rich and lead you into the background. How do you find the Mark II with clarity. I find with my camera, I don't like scenes - when I put it onto the actual pixels to view on photoshop,- theplants and leaves aren't sharp and stand out individually - its like the camera can't handle the small details.

Someone at Chelsea was telling me about this. It's so beautiful.

@nicolaeastwood It is well worth a visit but probably only for the next week or so if you want to see the flowers. I'm planning another visit on Tuesday or Wednesday although I want it dry but overcast (difficult to catch with strong shadows)

@tristansmum The '365' is a great way to find out how the flowers and trees are doing across the country. Down in Cornwall where my mum lives the bushes all came into flower a few weeks ago and have now gone over.

@pam1 This is a massive problem. I felt really churlish moaning that it was too sunny with strong patches of light and shade when the whole display is stunning. Although I did lift the shadows in post processing, it will be much easier if I can visit on a grey day as the whole image can be brightened and will be much more even. I'm loving the new camera for clarity and am practicing the one-shot focussing of selecting an easy to focus on point and then holding the shutter down and then moving to change the composition - still experimenting before I can give a proper opinion.
