30th July 2013

Tower Bridge raised to allow a tall ship to pass.

I wasn't prepared for this shot! We had spent the evening at the Tower of London on a private tour finishing up with seeing the 'Ceremony of the Keys' (excellent but no photography allowed). I had no tripod and the sky was black rather than the attractive blue usually seen in night shots. With weary feet we were heading back to get the tube when I noticed the bridge was open. I have only seen it raised on two other occasions, both on rather grey and 'flat sky' days.

I rushed over to lean against the wall, had to use a 2.8 aperture so the second tower is a bit soft, along with an ISO1600 so a bit grainy and only 1/80 shutter speed. Even so I am quite pleased - I couldn't lighten it any more!

More photos from the evening if you're interested! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.587195687999783.1073741863.186301661422523&type=1

Lovely capture!! I used to work in an office overlooking HMS Belfast and it was wonderful when the bridge went up especially when it was the Navy coming to Town!! My Boss would never let me "pop" out to take photos as he knew I wouldn't come back for ages!! LOL!!

The graininess and the "softness" of the second tower don't bother me at all, this is a lovely shot, and gives me a bit of the thrill I sometimes experience when I see shots of London which bring to mind its history.
