5th October 2013

Our last evening in the very friendly city of Toronto.

This really has to be one of the friendliest cities we have ever visited. Complete strangers have come up and given us directions (even when we weren't lost!), suggested sights to visit and have generally been really kind.

I resisted posting a photograph of the CN Tower a couple of days ago as I was hoping we would get across to the islands for some night photography.

Hooray! We managed it today after an aborted attempt on the 3rd (missed the ferry), was ill on the 4th but success on the 5th! On @Tristansmum's advice we headed for Centre Island, I had considered Pilsons Pier but the street car is out of action and it's a long walk. I had to get my timing right as the last half hourly ferry back to mainland was at 7.45pm and the best light is after 7pm. A scramble across some slippery rocks and we found the best view point. What a skyline, similar to Auckland in a way but round the other way (see my photo of Auckland to explain what I mean - http://www.emmadurnfordphotography.com/_photo_9792478.html). The CN Tower looked spectacular and dwarfs the massive buildings beside it.

I am always impressed by how sharp other peoples night photos are and I can never seem to achieve that - suggestions welcomed. I used a long exposure to get better light reflections and to avoid distracting waves in the waters of Lake Ontario so I set a 15-second exposure @f/8 and ISO100. Still not pristinely sharp but I enjoyed taking it anyway (along with all the others!). Best viewed large if you have time.
That looks pretty darn sharp to me. On large it is magnificent. I always love hearing about your adventures and hard work to get the shot. I love the blue - radiates and gives the photo the pop it needs. Good job.

Emma, you've taken a truly glamorous shot of the Toronto skyline, fav for me! As you know, I'm so glad you found Toronto a friendly and helpful place. People who live elsewhere in Canada often tend to put Toronto down as being cold and unfriendly; but that may simply be an attitude which comes with our being Canada's largest city. Having met you, I can testify that you and Colin are very friendly, warm people, so perhaps like attracts like a bit too. So glad you got out to the island as you wanted to. Hope it's a safe and comfortable flight home for you.

this is lovely - you've got some great colour here! do you do any post processing? you might find that sharpening in post will get you the crispness you're looking for - altho' this is looking pretty crisp as is...

in terms of set up, the things i try to remember with long exposures are to turn off the stabilizer on my lens and use the 2 second delay timer...

@northy I use a remote release but some people's seem pin sharp. I sharpen a little but try t keep most in camera. It's amazing seeing Toronto in the snow and I saw some great ice shots from someone else. Have a good Christmas.
