wonderful shot of that skipper, they are so small - we have two varieties around here and we have to catch them and look at the antennae to work out which is which! I think that's a small skipper, because the antenna are orange
@rhoing Thanks. I know people take pics of Skippers ALOT but it was the only butterfly at the park, so I had to shoot it! I did like how the background worked out. I did did edit it some...I went to picmonkey and then curves and then "color over ride" and then used the brush to brush Mr. Skipper but leave the color faded on the background.... I thought that would make Mr. skipper pop out better.
Congrats on the PP, love the fuzzies on this head and the way the background shading brings out the colors of this cute skipper. Well be looking for more on your album. Do you have any front ons? Love the texture of the leaf also. Great shot.
I think I photo'd one of these today. Insanely close-up at 250mm! Common, perhaps, and not as "sexy" as other species, but it makes a great photo if you can get a good, crisply-focused shot like this!
@sailingmusic Myrna...thanks for your kinds words. I am going to look through my other skipper pics and see if I have a head first shot. I think I do, even in my project a while back, but with my old p and s and it was not great quality.
@rhoing My next skipper I post, I am going to call it "Sexy Skipper." haha They are fun to shoot. I got a pic a long while back of three flying around...two are in perfect focus...one is flying over the other on the bloom, It would have been so GREAT but one is in the way and unfocused and sort of blocking the key bits. Darn!
This is the one I was looking for! I thought it was called "first skipper," so I googled "espyetta first skipper" and this page was the first "hit." Kinda scary.
Anyway, this looks like a Fiery Skipper (Hylephila phyleus). They are somewhat plain-looking below, but the wings are quite pretty "above"! As I said on another post, I have come to appreciate their playfulness, though that makes it difficult to photograph them. Look, guys! Let me get my photos…

Even *BETTER* magnified and the "dropped out" background is a wonderful DOF effect (which I favor)!
