20150107 kauri staircase

Kauri is a native New Zealand timber, but with living trees now protected by law, only recycled timber can now be used. This staircase is part of the magnificent restoration job on the Old Government Building in Wellington.
Built in 1876, it is still one of the world's largest wooden buildings.
Fantastic staircase! Didn't know Kauri pine was protected. So you can't even plant it in plantations for harvest?

@gilbertwood I'm not sure what the situation is for people planting privately, other than it takes an awfully long time to grow kauri compared to say, pine. The DOC website says most kauri on private land is now protected
