Button tower by evalieutionspics

Button tower

I have always kept the mother of pearl buttons separate from the rest of the buttons in the button box because they are so fragile. Yesterday, as I was taking the button box photo, I was thinking about what I might do with them. This is what I came up with.

I would have liked the whole tower to have been backed by the shadow, but I couldn't figure out how to get the light I needed, the front shadow and the reflection and that accomplished all at the same time. I also went back and forth about the negative space above the tower. I decided to keep it because every other configuration looked horrible. CC on this image is greatly appreciated.
I love the light angle and the reflection - great shot!

This is very lovely as is! In response to your request for input, I would say that though the shadow is fine, I don't feel it is necessary to the overall composition, and more black in the back might make the bottom buttons stand out more...

I really like this. Glad you kept the negative space!

First reaction...wow, second: hit the "fav" icon. Really lovely tones and lighting and how you constructed this.

Interesting tower of buttons, I might suggest that a crop on the left side to shear off the side of the tower but keeping the rest as is. For me this gives a great combination of shapes and lines. I do love the tones! Fav.

I really like the lighting and the composition. It would have looked great on one of your rocks. Like Button Totem. Artificial lighting is something that will be a focus for me probably after my first year. I need to understand it better. Especially using flash off the camera.

What a super tower of buttons - yes we were on the same wavelength weren't we - only you have beautiful lighting. Im glad you kept all the negative space. My reaction to your invitation for CC is wondering whether you were asking too much from the one photo in terms of the reflections and shadows and light all being present. Sometimes all of these things end up competing with each other and unresolved. With this in mind, I might have been tempted to forego the full shadow and crop under the bottom button more closely. (just above where you have put your watermark and keeping the glistening bit of reflection there).

@alia_801 Thank you very much!

@northy Thank you so much for your thoughtful CC. I agree; I was trying to put too much in the image while chasing the light.

@mlwerkheiser Thank you so much!

@granagringa Thank you for your kind words!

@olenadole Thank you!

@joysabin Thank you very much for your suggestion and comments. I will have a play to see what happens.

@gaylewood Thank you so much!

@sarasotab Thank you! This is natural light, in fact, it is one in which my OCF failed to fire! When I compared those that did with this one, this one had a warmth that won out over the others. Because I do so many macro shots, I use it a lot but have yet to rally explore it as fully as I need to.

@helenhall Thank you so much. I think your CC points are very valid, and when I did as you suggested, I did come away with a nicer image.
