"It's been a rough day..."

Grandma was not feeling very chipper when I took her photo, but she let me take it anyway.

When wrote that she had broken both arms right below the shoulder, I didn't realize at the time that she had actually shattered both arms. I only knew that they were not able to set them for some reason and that they were not able to do surgery due to her age. Now I know that the bones are so thin that they couldn't risk trying to set them and that they are only hoping for enough scar tissue to form that she will regain some function.

The problems with that are enormous. She has terrible arthritis in both knees and has used her arms to pull herself up onto a walker for 10+ years. Without her arms, she is not able to do that. The insurance company has deemed her "unwilling" to do the necessary work needed to regain enough mobility to return home and had pulled the plug on rehabilitation...two months after her fall. I am frustrated and sad. It feels as though they are saying, "It doesn't matter, she's almost 103-years-old; she will die soon." They don't care that her mind is sharp and that she has tried to do everything.
A brave lady, so sorry for the accident. Insurances are definitely not a man/woman of age's best friend... I understand your frustration and send all possible good wishes

The unfairness of this situation beggars belief. Ageism is definitely not a myth. The insurance company is heartless. Sending love and hugs to you and your grandma.

Sorry for your worries

I will never understand the callous attitude of some. Your Grandmother is a person and worth respect and dignity. Do you have any recourse available? I hope and pray that she is comfortable and that you find the strength and resources that might aide in this unconscionable situation.

She will need lots of visits to keep her mind active. Such a sad story of a lovely lady.

This is so sad - and triggers some strong emotions and memories from when my mother was alive - not so very long ago. I do feel for you and for her. Hugs your way. I wish there was something helpful I could say.

What a sad and frustrating story - feel so sorry for you and your grandmother - do hope you can find someone to guide her through this insurance nightmare.

I feel so sorry for you and your grandmother. You have insurance for a reason, then they "pull the plug" when you need it the most. Saying your grandmother is being uncooperative is absurd. I cannot believe this unfortunate situation for you and your family. I can see kindness in her eyes and I hope she can muster the strength to carry on. (However, I would be screaming at all those callous insurance people!). She is a worthy life and deserves to be treated as well as possible. Maybe if you bring her/your story to the attention of the news? Bad press sometimes works!

Thanks to all of you for your warm wishes and encouragement. Grandma is a feisty, strong woman. She became a paramedic at age 62 because the rural community she was living in needed one! The facility she is in provides excellent care and has repeatedly expressed how amazed they are at the level of family involvement she has. Multiple family members visit her daily. I am glad to report, that when I called last night, she was unavailable because she had asked to be taken back over to the rehab building (they are part of the same facility) so she could practice walking on the parallel bars. She is determined to go home!
