I can't believe that I found a caterpillar today on December 28th. I feel bad for this little caterpillar as it's way to cold for it to be out! The ground is usually covered with lots of snow this time of year but the weather has been a little crazy this season. I think he was already dead as he didn't move when I placed him on this rusty pipe! Mind you they do like to play dead and curl up when you pick them up!
What a surprise to discover a caterpillar in your picture!! Love how his colors and that of the surface he's on match to a 'T'. I hope he's not dead. Maybe he just needs to be tucked under a pile of leaves for the rest of the season.
P.S. I too am already hoping for a white Christmas in 2015. It worries me if you folks in Ontario didn't even have one. Just how far north do we have to live to be guaranteed snow on Dec. 25th???? Ha!
That's a wooly-bear caterpillar (turns into a tiger moth, I think); folklore has it that the more black in its stripes means a colder winter. The first several I saw this fall were completely black!
