I cleaned the pond last week and was so pleased to spot one of the newts still in evidence. No camera! Took camera into garden today to try to spot one but they tend to be more active when the sun is out. The fish however were quite active and I liked the way they were swimming under the reflections of the shrubbery, just like in camera overlay but not!
It must be newt weekend! I've been looking and looking and then today I saw 4, no 7, no 10+!! So excited to see them swimming around, some fanning their tails. It must be a temperature trigger. How the heck do you photograph them? Love your fishy reflections, the local cat got the last of ours :-(
@mave I must say it does look like a koi, but it was sold as a goldfish some years ago. It's mate is bright orange but this one just went paler and paler.
@Cherrill Aren't newts amazing little critters? I was apprehensive about photographing them, I've fallen in that pond once before and it's pretty deep! Guess a zoom lens would be best, but mine are very camera shy. Luckily my dogs seem to deter any local cats, sorry to hear about your fish.
I was looking at the picture and thinking (while reading the first sentence) that this newt looked more like a fish...LOL. Glad to read the rest of your narrative! I like how the fish is framed by the branches.

I would like you to try refraction in water droplets. Let me know if that is something you would want to try, I don't know if you can try focus staking on top of it. Here are some examples https://www.google.ca/search?q=refraction+water+droplets&rlz=1C1GCEB_enCA785CA785&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjBqI7wra3aAhUPZawKHabNC9gQsAQIKg&biw=1920&bih=959
