Of course any trip to York wouldn't have been complete without a walk down 'The Shambles' - a row of very old, overhanging streets dating back as far as the 1300s. Apparently they were where the butchers had their wares for sale on 'shammels' = old shelves and the buildings were purposely built just a few feet apart (at the top) to shade the meat below. Of course, the buildings were also made in overhanging stages so that one could throw the household 'waste' out of the window.. I imagine folk would walk away from the centre of the street!
I found this really hard to capture, it was so busy, and my eye could see so much more than my cameras. Oh, and there wasn't a straight line anywhere! I made it B&W in the end as I think it simplified it and shows more - like the 2 chocolate shops!
Chuffed to bits with all your kindly comments, thank you so much for giving the incentive to carry on into a third year :)
Nice shot, Phil! Did you go into the chocolate shops? Love the old buildings and the way they are built. You did a great job explaining the reason behind their appearances. Good job!
