This quiet little backwater street lies almost in the shadow of York Minster, but it is rarely visited by tourists.
The name Ogleforth is thought to be Viking in origin, and there is an interesting variety of architecture along it, including several Georgian properties, and on the left of this shot a short medieval terrace. This old terrace is a fascinating place - inset into the lower floor are three garages, I don't know when this conversion took place, but it almost certainly wouldn't be allowed under current conservation rules!
Nice architectural capture. I checked your suggestion and went around the corner and spotted the Minster...couldn't miss it! Great history of each of these photos. York looks like a great place to live.
I guess origionally there were no garages..so did they take livingspace away when they converted them into garages? and of interest, what are the double yellow lines in front of the trotoar for? love your pictures.
Thank you Padlock - we are very fortunate to have so many interesting places to photograph - although I must admit I don't yet have a night shot of the Minster!
Thank you Malc. I think it's a hard choice for young people when it comes to choosing where they go to university. York University is a lovely campus, and a huge amount has been spent in recent years on upgrading and expanding it. In the end though, it has to be their choice - they have to be happy with the place they go to, since it will be their home for several years.
Thank you Bruni - I assume living space was lost when the garages were installed. The yellow lines are an indication to motorists that they aren't allowed to park there. They do disfigure a lot of our city centre streets.
Thank you Molly - I do love the mixtures of styles and ages in many York city centre streets, and somehow it worked in the past even without town planning!
