Ice Sculpture by fishers

Ice Sculpture

York held its Festival of Angels at the weekend. A variety of ice sculptures were located in and behind Stonegate, in an area that has become known as The Quater. In previous years the sculptures were originally only in the Quater as a way of drawing attention to this quiet, attractive area tucked behind Stonegate and missed by many visitors to York.

As usual the weather was warm so the sculptures had a fluidity and gloss about them. Only a stump of the unicorn's horn remains due to the weather, and the number of people who can't resist touching the sculptures!

Must have been interesting to see these - I can see why people want to touch them. The reflections are good.

A great capture of this beautiful ice sculpture. We have in Holland once a year a big ice sculpture festival but inside so the temp. is below zero.

Now why would people do that. here it would be cold enough for the sculptures to last. the bay here is frozen over and fish huts are already placed out there. I've bad news, our furnace just gave out and we have a cold spell. tonight minus l4 C with the wind feels like minus 17 C. we're now running on electric space heaters. brrrr.

Such a cool subject and beautiful capture, Katharine. I like how you were able to capture seeing through the ice sculpture.

Love the gloss and the glistening - must have been difficult to do in this relatively mild spell

@bruni York has an event every weekend in December, for some reason it is always warmer when this one happens. You do seem to be in a better location for the sculptures to last. I do hope you have managed to get your furnace mended. Katharine

@ninadumlao Thank you. It was interesting to see how the colours of peoples clothes affected the sculptures, it made them quite different. Katharine

@malc Thank you. Although the sculptures didn't last as long as they might have done, I felt the melting process enhanced the gloss on them. Katharine
