One of the things that my dad really used to enjoy doing was to create marquetry pictures, and my visit to Richmond on Sunday gave me the opportunity to take a shot of one of the views that he had created in wood veneers.
Almost all of his pictures were created from kits, so the design was by someone else, but the result was unique, since not only had he interpreted the picture in his own way, but the sets of veneers in each kit are unique, with their individual colours and grain patterns.
So here we are, two different views of Cornforth Hill in Richmond, North Yorkshire, taken through the arch of the postern gate on the western side of the old town walls (of which little survives). The viewpoint isn't quite aligned in the two images, but many of the houses are recognisable in both, and even the shrub on the right hand side of each picture is clear. The neat thing about marquetry is that there are no cars to clutter up the image!
Thank you all for your kind and generous comments, and for the favs - We have quite a few of dad's marquetry pictures around our house, and mum has a lot on display too. They may not be very fashionable today, but I love the effect of the different types of wood veneer in creating the pictures. They also remind me of dad spending many hours carefully cutting and shaping the pieces. He found creating his marquetry pictures a very fulfilling thing to do after he dad retired from work.
