St Luke’s hospice is in the Whirlow area of Sheffield, and caters for adults with incurable illnesses. It was opened in October 1971 on land donated by British Steel who at that time owned the adjacent Clifford House. The hospice is a registered charity and only receives one third of its funding from the NHS, leaving it to raise over £4 million annually through charity to continue its work.
This sculpture of St Luke (the doctor) is above the entrance doors and was taken by Katharine last week. Katharine’s mum has spent around eight weeks in here, and has been looked after really well. Sadly, this morning, Katharine’s mum Betty lost her fight against cancer. Thank you to all of you who have supported Katharine and her mum in your thoughts and prayers over recent weeks and months.
Great shot of this statue , Great, interesting info too. So sorry to read Katharine’s Mum has lost her battle, Send you and you family my condolence and deepest sympathy.
Thank you all for your kind and considerate comments. I've passed them on to Katharine. She is staying with her dad at the moment. So far they both seem to be coping reasonably well.
It is a sad and difficult time and Katharine has a double loss now - not only is her mum not there, but now her dad will be alone, making it even harder for her. Special condolences to the family.
