On the way to my mum's house yesterday I passed this sculpture beside the main road through the town where she lives. I hadn't seen it before, but it seems that it has been there since 2003, and it is one of three installed in different parts of the town as part of a regeneration project.
Local materials were used in it's creation. The stone hull is magnesian limestone from a nearby quarry, while the oak beams were from old lock gates on a canal, which is now disused, close to the site of this sculpture.
The sculpture commemorates shipbuilding that used to take place at a site not too far from where it is sited.
Unfortunately it was surrounded by parked cars, and it was impossible to get a shot without some of them in the background. I really need to visit it again at a time when there are fewer cars. I also need to get shots of the other two sculptures installed at the same time.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are all appreciated.
It is surprising what it is possible to discover just walking along beside a busy road - I'm glad I spotted this. I also posted a question on a Facebook page dedicated to this area, and received replies and a link to a website with details of many other sculptures in South Yorkshire, so it looks like I need to spend time discovering some of them!
