Franks Bridge, Kirkby Stephen by fishers

Franks Bridge, Kirkby Stephen

On our trip to Kirkby Stephen we found Frank’s Bridge, behind the Market Square and down Stoneshot. This is a C17th pack horse bridge which is part of the corpse route from neighbouring villages. On the near end of the bridge are two stones where the coffin could be rested before the climb to the Parish Church.

Frank was allegedly, Francis Birkbeck, a brewer in the early C19th, and some of the buildings in the background were originally part of the brewery.

This is a lovely picnic spot and seemed well used by the locals
