Doorway by fishers

Doorway

A shopping trip to the Go Outdoors shop took Katharine and I past this doorway. It was still in shade, but by the time we had finished at the shop the sunlight was highlighting parts of this doorway.

Today it is the entrance to an apartment block, but this building was once York County Hospital. The hospital had been founded in 1740 and this building was opened in 1851. It functioned as a hospital until 1977 when the York District Hospital was opened on a different site.

The local newspaper has been publishing a series of photo archives and a recent one was about this building as a hospital - http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/features/history/14626213.LOST_YORK__14_photos_of_York_County_Hospital__inside___out/

The first shot of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1925 was taken on the steps of this doorway.

It's a beautiful doorway and those brick with the inlaid pattern - wish I knew the name of the style - are super. Nice history, as always. Fav

Thank you all for your comments and favs, it's good to hear from you all!

I'm not sure when I will get round to it, but York does have an amazing collection of impressive doorways, so at some stage I'm planning a series of photos of them.
