Arriving back from my mums on Tuesday, I realised that the lighting on York railway station had been improved. I've no idea when it was done, it could have been a while, but it is brighter than it was, making this shot easier to achieve.
It was a relatively peaceful time. The train on the left is a service to Harrogate, and the passengers on the left are waiting for a service to Scarborough, but the rest of the station is quiet.
This part of the station was opened in 1877, and at that time it was the largest railway station in the world, with thirteen platforms. It would later be extended to 16 platforms, before rationalisation around 1988 reduced it to the current 11 platforms. This was when the main route between London and Edinburgh was being electrified.
The station is currently served by 6 train operating companies (or 7 if you include the summer only steam services operated by West Coast Railways). Around 8.5 million rail journeys per year start or end here, with a further 1.4 million people changing trains here.
Very much a contrast to many of your shots. It took me a moment to work out what it was. Lighting & People. VML the vanishing point; stations are fascinating with so much purpose and bustle.
Gosh, that is brighter! Been through that station so many times and have never seen so much light in it. Makes it look completely different, how interesting.
It's massive in comparison with anything near me!! Perhaps I've passed through on the way to London a couple of times! York is still on my 'to do ' list!
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, it is nice to hear from you all.
As a frequent traveller by rail, I'm a regular visitor to York railway station, and it is such a pleasant place to start or end a journey.
