The water feature forms part of City Park, at the heart of Bradford, and when the weather is warmer a very popular place.
According to the Visit Bradford web site "City park is Bradford's brilliant multi-award winning public space. The Mirror Pool is the largest urban water feature in the UK. It can be a cool, tranquil and misty space, a huge reflective watery mirror, a bubbling, squirting, popping and splashing fountain display, a beautifully lit aqueous light display or a thunderous 100ft water canon. City Park's computer plays 100 fountains, laser lights, mist and water effects like a maestro conducting a glorious watery symphony."
Wikipedia says "The town hall was designed by Lockwood and Mawson, and opened in 1873. It was built by John Ives & Son of Shipley and took three years to build at a cost of £100,000. It was opened on 9 September 1873, on a very wet day, by Matthew Thompson, the mayor. It was first extended in 1909 to a design by Norman Shaw and executed by architect F.E.P. Edwards, with another council chamber, more committee rooms and a banqueting hall. It was extended again in 1914 with a new entrance and staircase in baroque marble by William Williamson and listed grade I on 14 June 1963."
Thank you for sharing, Ian. This is such a beautiful building and looks even better with all that open space in front of it. Fantastic reflection on the water, too. Fav.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
This city park is a fascinating place to sit and people watch when the weather is warmer. Bradford's population is a real mixture of races, colours and creeds, but whichever group children are from, they all enjoy playing in the water feature - dodging the fountains as they rise and fall in height, and running below the arches formed by some of the fountains.
Bradford is perhaps the last place that one would expect to see such a magnificent victorian building coupled with this modern water park. Most excellent Ian and thanks for sharing and the fascinating back-story.
Thank you Richard. Bradford has been quite a surprise. I've had several chances to explore since Louise and her family moved there. I love thiis park, and there is an amazing collection of Victorian buildings in the city centre. Still more to discover on future visits!
