I Have a Dirty Secret - my family believe that I can find mud on a walk, even in the midst of a drought. They have acquired plenty of evidence over the years too! However, it was really easy to find mud as Katharine and I explored the grounds of Castle Howard.
This shot shows one of the many paths through Ray Wood. It didn't look too bad as we started along this path, but it did become something of a challenge as we went along.
This wood is to the east of the house, on rising ground. A reservoir near the highest point provides water under pressure for the Atlas Fountain in the formal gardens south of the house. A wide variety of trees and shrubs grow in this wood, including numerous varieties of rhododendron as well as a range of native species.
It does look muddy, Ian. Bet you had to spend an hour outside cleaning away the mud before you dared go inside. When I go in the garden and the soil is all soggy I put plastic bags on my shoes and it works, my shoes remain clean, I through the plastic bags in the reclining bin and all is ok.
Thank you all for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated.
It may have been a bit muddy in the woodland, but it is an attractive place - and we don't plan to let a little mud prevent us from doing future walks, wherever the mud may lead us! - anyone care to join us?
