I can't give this it's proper name - it's one of the many interesting things that I find on my walks and that I can't identify, so all I can say is that I hope you find it as interesting as I did.

Thank you to all of you who suggested what the flower might be. Particular thanks to @shannejw who identified this as a Campion. Having looked up information and photos of the various Campions, I think it is probably Bladder Campion, it's prefered habitat being 'dry, calcareous grassland, often on scrubby field boundaries', which is exactly the description of the countryside where I found this.
