Eight weeks ago this structure wasn't here, and the area was in use as a car park. It's a temporary structure to allow the performance of some of the plays of Shakespeare during a three month summer season in a structure that resembles the kind of theatre that would have been used when Shakespeare's plays were written.
It's the second summer that this temporary theatre has been on this site, and the plays performed last summer were a resounding success, hence the second season this year.
In front of the theatre is a village with refreshments on sale. The photo itself was taken from the steps that lead up to Clifford's Tower, the only major remains of what was once York Castle.
That must make a wonderful venue for a Shakespeare play. I have the complete works of Shakespeare which I have read quite a few times and have been twice to Stratford-on-Avon and to the house where he lived. I don't read Shakespeare nowadays - probably because I have other books available.
Thank you all for your comments, they are very much appreciated.
I had planned to get photos of the theatre when it was being built, but the builders were too quick for me. Perhaps I will manage to get some shots at the beginning of September when it is being dismantled again.
