Another shot from Rowntree Park, this time showing the lodge building which has recently been in the news.
When first built, the lower floor was used as a boat house for the boating on the lake, the middle floor as a cafe with sun terraceand the top floor was the park-keeper’s house.Over the years much has changed. There is no longer boating on the lake, the cafe became rather run down and a park keeper was no longer employed.
A few years ago an organisation called 'Explore' took over running the libraries in York, and one of their innovations was to partially refurbish the Lodge and open a Reading Cafe, where refreshments and library books are available.
Earlier this year, and rather controversially, there are now plans to refurbish more of the building for use as holiday accommodation.
As you can see, it is built on a small ridge which commands a wonderful view over the park, and which makes it a great photographic subject looking across the lake.
We once stayed in a holiday apartment right by this. It was a super park to explore for the kid when he was younger, though the lake wasn't appealing for putting our little steam boat into, that's for sure! Interesting to read your commentary therefore.
Lovely building and reflection. I always enjoy reading your information, it makes it more interesting when looking at the subject.
The building looks beautiful and I would visit the reading cafe anytime. we have one in the next town over where we sometimes stop for coffee or ice cream.
You’ve captured the reflections of this building very nicely in the water - interesting to hear of the building’s history too! I do like reflection shots so this is a Fav for me.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, which put this shot on the popular page.
Much of the park was restored as part of a millennium project and with the help of lottery funding, but sadly the arrival of large numbers of Canada Geese and Greylag Geese has led to problems, especially around the lake.
