This view across the wide expanse of Spaunton Moor on the North York Moors highlights how the purple heather is loosing it's blooms and the landscape is turning back to its more usual brown.
The track across the moor is one of the shooting tracks used by grouse shooters after the 'glorious 12th' of August. No shooters anywhere near here when I took this shot, although I did see some a few days earlier on a very dull grey day.
On the horizon is Ana Cross. It isn't the original medieval wayside cross, but a modern replacement. The severely eroded cross arms of the original can be seen in the crypt of the church in Lastingham, a few miles south of this cross site.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I've walked across these moors many times, in good weather and bad, hot weather and cold, and have greatly enjoyed it. I find it very theraputic. My favourite time is when the heather is in full bloom, but sadly I didn't see it at it's best this year.
@will_wooderson Thank you William. I find it hard to be objective about my photos of this moor, since I'm emotionally attached to walking over these moors!
