The town hall in Leeds had this display inside the Victoria Hall. The holons spin, and as they spin faster they stretch wider and become shorter, as they slow down they become longer and thinner. They make an attractive and ever changing display.
The brochure describes Reflecting Holons in this way "Dutch design studio Martens & Visser is a collaboration between artists Michiel Martens and Jetske Visser. Central to their work are the themes of movement and transformation, inspired by nature and a curiosity about the unknown. The Reflecting Holons are a series of beautiful and mesmerising optical illusions, best compared to giant bubbles or liquid water drops. An object in between the physical and the digital, the Reflecting Holons capture the surrounding light and seem to glow."
@fishers I just looked it up - it is a Greek word that means something that is simultaneously a whole and a part. Interesting choice, therefore, for this art piece.
Thank you all for all the lovely comments and favs which are very much appreciated, and which put this shot on the Popular Page.
I think this was my favourite of the exhibits that I saw. It was the sort of thing you could spend ages watching - it was quite hypnotic.
I'm not sure what a holon is - perhaps an invented word which seemed to fit this artwork?
