Platform 2 at York railway station is not often used for passenger services. It is a dead end platform and the only route it serves is towards Scarborough. Since almost all services to and from Scarborough start further west than York, they cannot use this platform. Hence it is usually used for storing trains not currently in use.
This is one of the new 'NOVA 3' trains coming into service with train operator Trans Pennine. It is quite unusual in that it is a locomotive and coaches, rather than a multiple unit train with underfloor engines.
There have been quite a few issues with these trains - with the couplers between the coaches, braking, software and other problems, but they are becoming more common in passenger use. They will no doubt be popular with passengers, since overcrowding has been a significant issue on Trans Pennine services, and these trains have almost double the number of seats compared with their older trains.

I haven't had a ride on one of these trains yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so in the coming months.
