A Small Piece of History

Yesterday was a very mixed day. I left Katharine in the care of our friends and neighbours while I went down to Rotherham to see my mum on her 95th birthday, so that was the high point of the day. Sadly, mid afternoon I got a phone call from a friend of Katharine who had called an ambulance because Katharine had severe pain again. So my day ended with a visit to A&E at York hospital to see Katharine, while they were waiting for a bed to admit her to a ward.

She looks a bit better today, and is in the process of going through a number of tests. They seem to have subdued her pain quite a bit. We really could do with an end to this - it is the fourth time she has been in hospital in just over a month.

I had left a photo for Katharine to post, but obviously that wasn't possible, under the circumstances, so this is it posted today. My notes for yesterday were as follows:

A short walk along Stonegate in York reveals a fascinating collection of interesting historical features. On the corner of Little Stonegate is the Teddy Bear Shop, an old timber framed building, and on the corner of the building is a carved figure. This was originally a ship’s figurehead. York was once a significant port, but as its importance as a port declined, many ships were dismantled and their timbers reused in the timber framed buildings of the time. This is one of the more prominent examples.

This is hard time for you and your family. I'm sorry. Is Katharine's pain from pneumonia or of damaged spleen? What alse doctors can do? . Fortunately, your mum is recovering good. Wish all the best to all of you.

It's very tough on you, family and friends when Katharine's condition isn't continuing a positive course. The doctor's need to dial into the exact cause and treat her accordingly. I am sensitive to your situation since a close family had a stroke about seven weeks ago. Take care.

Beautiful figurehead. There is one here exhibited at the Malta Maritime Museum and it is huge - could be over a storey high; makes you think how big the ship was. The timber of the ship - British - was also made use of elsewhere.

Thank you all for all your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated!

Thank you also to those of you who sent birthday wishes to my mum, she was thrilled when I told her. Thank you also to those of you who sent best wishes to Katharine. She had surgery last night to cauterize her spleen. She looked in much better health today, although very tired. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of her medical traumas.
