A Small Piece of History (4)

At the north end of Stonegate, at the junction with Petergate and Minster Yard, you can see the goddess Minerva if you look up above the Shared Earth shop.

Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, sits leaning on a pile of books, with an owl to her right. She was there to advertise the former bookseller's shop below, where authors and literary readers met as members of one of Britain's earliest book groups.

This part of York was once strongly associated with book selling and printing, with several historical features reflecting that. Even today there is a second hand bookshop in Minster Gates.

Katharine continues to make slow progress, but the hospital routine is making her rather tired.

Lively detail. York is a fascinating place.

I am really enjoying your "looking up" detail shots of York.
Hospital is a tiring place. All the lights, the irregular activity, sounds and bustle. I hope she is well enough to come home again soon. Much love as always.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, which put this shot on the Popular Page.

I will be back to these small pieces of history when I get the chance to go into the city centre without getting soaked by the current wet weather, or trampled by the masses of Christmas shoppers out there!
