York railway station is a very large and impressive building, situated on a sweeping curve.

The original York railway station was built within the city walls, but the massive development of new routes between 1840 and 1870 meant that it was soon far too small for the growing railway network.

The present station, designed by the North Eastern Railway architects Thomas Prosser and William Peachey, opened on 25 June 1877. It had 13 platforms and was at that time the largest in the world. As part of the new station project, the Royal Station Hotel, designed by Peachey, opened in 1878 next to the railway station.

In 1909 new platforms were added, and in 1938 the current footbridge was built and the station resignalled. The station was designated as a Grade II* listed building in 1968.

The track layout through and around the station was remodelled again in 1988 as part of the resignalling scheme that was carried out prior to the electrification of the East Coast Main Line shortly afterwards. This resulted in several bay platforms (mainly on the eastern side) being taken out of service and the track to them removed. At the same time a new signalling centre (York IECC) was commissioned on the western side of the station to control the new layout and also take over the function of several other signal boxes on the main line.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated!

Katharine continues to make slow progress in hospital. They have now identified the specific organism infecting and stimulating the build up of fluid around her lungs. Her doctor said it was something he had never come across before. A suitable antibiotic has been sourced to treat it. She will need intravenous antibiotics for several weeks, but once arrangements are made for an appropriate drug fridge and antibiotics to be delivered here she will be able to come home and continue treatment here, with just weekly hospital checks. She may be home on Friday.
