This view in York city centre is taken from Spurriergate (street of the spur makers), looking towards Coney Street (the kings street). This area was pedestriansed many years ago, and as you can see the pedestrians make full use of the whole street.
Gradually numbers of people in this area are increasing, although quite a few shops are not allowed to reopen until after 4th July.
Most shops that are open have a staff member at the door to control numbers of people in the shop, and there are markings outside the shop so people can wait in a queue without causing congestion for neighbouring shops.
So, although the photo looks almost normal, there are changes. The street is less busy than normal, and with numbers of people at this level I felt quite relaxed to be there.
The red van in the shot is one of very few vehicles allowed in this area during to day. It belongs to Royal Mail and is collecting parcels from the post office. When moving through this area it travels at walking pace.
Yes it’s starting to open up again, but I’m still not bothering to go anywhere near shops. We go up on top of the moors where it is very quiet and safer! Nice photo, I haven’t been to York in years.
I am enjoying York from your lovely shots and stories almost as if I were there myself. This is another lovely capture of this nice street. I see nobody wearing masks even though they are advised to just like here. I only wear a mask when I go to church for mass but carry one with me everywhere I go.
Thank you all for your interesting comments, they are very much appreciated.
The empty streets of York are beginning to fill up with people a bit, but still nowhere near as busy as they would have been before Covid-19. It is still fairly easy to maintain the 2 metre social distancing requirement. As for the absence of masks, the government may have moved from saying that they are of no use to saying they will help protect others, but the population have not made the change yet. The only places where masks have become normal are on buses and trains, where travel is still restricted to essential journeys.
Like some of you, I've been nervous about going into places with other people, but I do so because it is probably safer now than it will be when more restrictions are lifted next weekend and places get busier. The current rate of new infections in York is very low.
