Ring for Peace

Three huge bells that rang out in York more than 500 years ago have found new homes in York city centre.

They were originally hung in Christchurch, in Kings Square, a church that was demolished in 1937 after some years of disuse.

The bells have been placed in the grounds of Holy Trinity Goodramgate, the garden of Merchant Adventurers Hall off Fossgate, and St Paul's Bookshop, also in Fossgate and form part of York's commemorations of the centenary of the First World War.

This is the one in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church Goodramgate, and is placed near the entrance to the church. It bears a Latin inscription which reads "Sit Nomen Domini Benedictum" (Blessed be the name of the Lord).

Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.

The original plan for the bells was to display them for a year, anf then to located them in a church tower in York so that they could be rung again - but that was four years ago and so far there have been no indications that they will be moving.
