Yesterday didn't go quite as expected. At lunchtime I went to York railway station because a steam locomotive was due to be moved from the railway museum to a preserved railway in Bury. It was stranded at York railway museum in late March when the first Covid-19 lockdown began. It wasn't to be my day - the locomotive had been moved around 50 mins earlier than planned, so I missed it.
So, on to my second plan, and off to the Museum Gardens to see the effect of autumn on the gardens, and I spotted a small cluster of autumn crocuses, so this is a shot of one of them.
Colchicum autumnale, commonly known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or naked ladies, is a toxic autumn-blooming flowering plant that resembles the true crocuses, but is a member of the plant family Colchicaceae, unlike the true crocuses which belong to the family Iridaceae.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I've only recently discovered autumn crocuses, and now know of two local locations where they are grown - and it was only yesterday that I discovered that they were not true crocuses.
Love this delicate bloom with perfect lighting and raindrops
