I always have a list of places to visit when a new year starts, and 2020 was no exception. One of those was York Minster. I've been into the Minster many times, but it is such an attractive and inspiring place that a revisit was overdue. I finally managed a visit on Wednesday, the day before lockdown would see it closed to visitors again.
Covid restrictions mean that numbers of visitors were limited, and there was a one-way route through it, with several areas closed, including the tower and the undercroft. Despite that I enjoyed my visit. With few visitors it was much easier to take photos, and to see some of the less obvious features.
This shot shows the nave, looking towards the nave altar, from below the west window, with autumn sunlight streaming through the upper windows.
The first York Minster was built in 627AD, but the current, much larger stone building was constructed between 1220AD and 1472AD, and reflects a variety of architectural styles from it's 250 years of construction.
It is built above the site of the Roman headquarters building, and Roman remains can be seen in the Minster undercroft.
Beautiful shot and a wonderful temple. Have always wanted to visit York, never managed to. I will never do that probably; since my son returned to Malta I do not have a yearning to return after the many times I have been there.
