Another of the many narrow Snickleways in York, Lady Peckett's Yard has featured before in our project, but looking in the opposite direction - https://365project.org/fishers/365/2013-03-18
It can be found on Pavement, to the right of the York Gin shop. It leads down through the arch in this shot, and then left to Fossgate.
The present name came from Alice Peckett, who was wife of the Lord Mayor of 1701, who died in 1759. It was used by 1782 and originally referred to the open space into which the lane led.
The timber framed building on the left is known as Herbert’s House, after Sir Thomas Herbert, and it dates from the 16th century. Thomas was born in York in 1606. He was a traveller, courtier and government official. He became a close friend of King Charles I, and attended him before his execution in 1649. Thomas returned to the city of his birth when he retired in 1665.
Beautiful alleyway and capture. I have a book with the history of Charles I in his last days and also a detailed biology of Oliver Cromwell. Sad days during those difficult times when Englishman fought Englishman and killing was very easy.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I've no doubt that we will be looking at more of these hidden corners, but with the end of lockdown and the move to tiered restrictions (but with all shops allowed to open), I will be avoiding the city centre while the Christmas shopping madness gets underway.
