This shot is a close-up of the cat sculpture on Walmgate Bar (see yesterday's post). His name is 'Kinship' and he was placed here in November 2016 by the founders of the Gatehouse Coffee Shop.
This is a continuation of a long established tradition in York. It dates back to 1920 when Sir Stephen Aitcheson placed two on a building that he owned in Low Ousegate. A few others followed his example and slowly numbers grew.
In 1979 local architect Tom Adams gave a boost to their numbers by placing them on buildings that he designed. York based sculptor Jonathon Newdick created them.
There is now a cat trail around the city centre, which takes around an hour to complete, or for the more energetic there are a few more (like this one) which are a little further from the city centre. There are 23 cats in total.
The trail begins at the Cat Gallery Shop in Low Petergate, and trail leaflet is available from there, or online. These historic notes were taken from the leaflet.
9Those tulips are not planted for there beauty. They have to grow bigger. Soon they will be headed ).
Thank you all for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated.
I'm hoping to walk around more of the city walls soon, so expect to see more of it's structure and features before too long!

I am going to assume that all the cats look the same
Thank you Nina. As far as I know each of the cats is different. Some can be seen crawling up walls, for example http://365project.org/fishers/365/2020-05-27
