Through an Arrow Slit by fishers

Through an Arrow Slit

This shot follows from the view of Bootham Bar posted yesterday and is taken looking through one of the arrow slits just above the arch in the Bar.

I have been trying to find out more about the Victorian restoration, and the arrow slits on the city side of Bootham Bar, but with little success so far.

I'm quite convinced that there would not have been arrow slits on the city side of the Bar when it was important as a defensive feature. If an attacking force were to capture Bootham Bar, these arrow slits would have helped their progress into the city, since they would have been able to fire on defenders in the city.

Still, it does give us an interesting view along High Petergate and some of the attractive and varied buildings to be found there.

still a good view today, not shooting with arrows but with cameras,

Great street scene, I love that it’s kept its charm with no neon signs.

Another fantastic shot of your great city.

Lovely city scene. Not sure if I am correct, but many of the people around are not wearing masks and that is a very good sign. We are still required to wear a mask when we go out.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.

I felt quite comfortable on this visit to the city centre - it wasn't too busy and people were keeping their distance. Dione ( @sangwann ) mentioned the absence of face masks. The Covid-19 rules in England only require the wearing of face masks in shops and other premises, and on public transport, but not in outside areas. Some have been wearing masks outdoors, but as the number of cases declines that is becoming less common. I tend not to wear one when outside unless I'm in an area that is crowded. The mask then goes on and I leave and look for a quieter area.
