Fot the first time this year I was this morning able to see a steam locomotive at work at York railway station. Here the locomotive 'Tornado' is seen below the magnificent curved roof of the station as it begins to pull away northwards from platform 5.
The service had started very early this morning from Leicester pulled by a diesel locomotive, but that was replaced by 'Tornado' at Barrow Hill, north of Chesterfield, to continue the journey through York and on almost to Newcastle, before turning westwards to Carlisle. The return journey would return south by a different route.
Sadly, non of the original post second world war A1 class locomotives were preserved, but in 1990 a group was formed to build a new one. Some 19 years later it moved under its own steam for the first time. Following extensive testing, it began a programme of main line tours, which has continued ever since. The group behind its construction are now building a second locomotive from another extinct class.
There is something very special about a puffa billy. Really must go see Mallard again and “meet” original Rocket.
Lovely image, brings back memories of decades gone train spotting with dad at Doncaster from the bridge.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Hopefully it won't be too long before I can take more steam train photos. There are a few scheduled, including a regular weekly service to Scarborough in the summer.
I think I know the bridge in Doncaster that you mean, just south of the station and with a ramp down to the excursion platform. I was a regular visitor there in the mid 1960s!

Thank you both. The railway station is an impressive structure, and I love the arch of the roof over curved tracks.

Thank you. It is wonderful to see these marvellous machines at work.
