The first public park in Rotherham was Boston Park, south of the town centre, and to the south and west of the park are Canklow Woods. The broad path in this shot leads through a flat area, with a steep tree covered hillside just to the west.
Many of the trees here are siver birch and have been coppiced to encourage the growth of several trunks on each tree. The walks through the woodland are today attractive, but it was once an important industrial site in the early part of the industrial revolution, when charcoal was the only fuel that could be used to make iron, an important local industry in Rotherham and Sheffield.
I have a leaflet with a heritage walk through the woods, highlighting the various features to be seen. I haven't completed the walk yet, but one day.....
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
There are some lovely rural areas in Rotherham, despite it's reputation for heavy industry. Some 70% of the land in Rotherham is classed as rural.

I love the way that often the most successful industry works in conjunction with nature!
