Future’s Past and Present (3)

A different part of the massive mural 'Future’s Past and Present' close to Doncaster railway station, and here in tribute to the work of the NHS, we have a black female doctor, with Conisbrough Castle in the background.

We have had a lot of contact with the health service over the last two years, first with Katharine and her series of emergency admissions to hospital (mainly in York) in late 2019 / early 2020, and more recently with my mum at Rotherham hospital over the spring and summer this year, and one of the striking things about the staff is the mix of cultures, races and creeds all working together to help those in need. A big thank you to all in the NHS for the care and support that we have received from all the staff that we had dealings with over the last two years. Our society has become very multicultural (and nowhere is that more clear than in our hospitals) and this part of the mural clearly reflects that this is the case in the town of Doncaster, as in most British towns and cities.

Conisbrough Castle is a medieval fortification initially built in the 11th century by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Hamelin Plantagenet acquired the property by marriage in the late 12th century. Hamelin and his son William rebuilt the castle in stone, including its prominent 28-metre (92 ft)-high keep. The castle remained in the family line into the 14th century. The fortification was then given to Edmund of Langley, passing back into royal ownership in 1461. Conisbrough Castle fell into ruin, and was given to the Carey family in the 16th century. Sir Walter Scott used the location for his 1819 novel Ivanhoe and by the end of the 19th century the ruins had become a tourist attraction.

The state took over the management of the property in 1950, but by the 1980s the visitor facilities were felt to be unsuitable. The keep was re-roofed and re-floored in the 1990s with the help of EU funding and recreation room displays created in the keep. English Heritage continues to operate the property as a tourist attraction.

A beautiful tribute to a black female doctor and all doctors over this difficult period in our history.
This doctor does not seem to be a modern doctor - which era is she from?

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

This is my last shot of the mural for now. The low sunlight made a shot of the whole mural difficult, with sunlight reflection off some parts of it, but I will be paying another visit for another collection of photos sometime quite soon.

@ninaganci

Not sure of the age that the nurse is meant to represent Nina, but I assume relatively recent, since the rather relaxed uniform is what you are currently likely to see in a hospital in the UK.
