Well, we don't know exactly who broke the window, or the rest of the building, but we do know that King Henry VII was the author of the dissolution of the monasteries.
The monks of St Mary's Abbey were given pensions in 1540 and the buildings and their wealth siezed by the king. Part of the abbey buildings was converted as a palace for the king (which still exists as the Kings Manor, now housing part of York University), and much of the stone from the walls and lead from the roof of the abbey church were recycled into other buildings.
Ironically, the boundary wall of the abbey precinct has survived rather better than the abbey church itself. The Museum Gardens occupy much of the abbey precinct and make a lovely open space in York city centre.
Gorgeous architecture. Who said modern architecture and design is beautiful? It is rubbish compared to this - at least that is my sincere opinion. Very beautiful capture. Fav.

The ruins form an attractive background to the gardens. In the past they have formed a theatre backdrop for the York Mystery Places. They are an essential feature of the gardens.
Thank you both - I keep being drawn back to these abbey ruins to take more photos. In fact I was there this afternoon. I love the low afternoon sun bringing out the details of the architecture.
