Below the Great Hall (shown in yesterday's shot), is the undercroft.
It is an impressive sight to see the massive oak timbers which support the structure of the Great Hall above.
The Undercroft floor has gradually been raised by about 1.5m due to the rise in the water-table. The area is subject to flooding by the River Foss, the last occasion being in 2015. The heights of floods are marked on one of the walls.
The Undercroft was used as a Hospital and Almshouse from 1373 to 1900. The inmates were made up of 13 poor and infirm men and women (13 being the number of Disciples plus Jesus Christ). They were cared for by Chaplains paid through the Guild.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It is quite remarkable to see the massive buildings that could be built in the medieval period, with only a few basic tools and a lot of human ingenuity.
