The secret Malham tree by fueast

The secret Malham tree

Well I did have a lie in until 8.30. But then it seemed like a waste of a predicted to be interesting day of weather to sort things out in the house (you may have noticed that I always put such things off...). Anyway I headed out to Malham and finally found the lone tree that looks from pics like its on the cove but actually isn't. Was a strangely wonderful day of weather. Sun, hail, bits of snow and a howling gale up here. Was lucky enough for a break in the clouds just before sunset. It was bloody freezing so I didn't hang around too long.

@pamknowler It's not really near a car park but you could stop at the side of the road fairly close by. It's off the road from Malham up to the tarn. There's a small fence to climb...

January 14th, 2015
Stunning image. Fav. Alison, if you don't mind me asking, is this HDR? I've been so reluctant to attempt HDR, mainly because I have no idea how to effectively process it. Just wondering if you process it that way or just process in LR or something similar.
January 14th, 2015
@losthorizon Not exactly sure what HDR means - I used to use photomatix to tone map but am doing everything in photoshop now. So this was processed first in raw converter - I added a fake ND filter to darked the sky and lighted the foreground (didn[t use a real one cos they give weird spots from reflections when shooting into the sun). Then I added some dynamic contrast in Nik colour efex. Then I probably fiddled a few more knobs in photoshop. Is that HDR? Not sure....
January 14th, 2015
@fueast That makes your shots even better, which I didn't think possible. HDR is High Dynamic Range imaging. Its a post processing technique. You take 3 or more photos of the same scene, but with different bracketed exposures. 1 capture exposes for the background, 1 for the middle, and 1 for the foreground effectively. Then with a program, you combine all the images, tweak them a bit, and theoretically you get what the human eye actually sees. A lot of people do it for landscape with varying success I think. Some, it comes out over exposed in the wrong areas...strange haloes and shadows form around edges....looks fake. But others that do it right, its stunning.

So when I see your photos, which I'm always in awe of, I've often wondered if you used that process. But the fact that you can capture such amazing shots in a natural way...its incredible.

Thanks for taking the time to explain your process. Appreciate it.
January 14th, 2015
@losthorizon I do sometimes merge shots as you describe. I used to in photomatix but now in photoshop which gives a much sharper end result. Is even using a grad filter natural? It's kind of HDR but just using 1 shot. Who knows what the definitions are but it's fun to play around. And slightly addictive...
Thanks for your kind comments
January 14th, 2015
@fueast Photography is so subjective...its insane to discuss sometimes. The SOOC people will tell you a true photograph isn't natural unless its processed by film. But there are huge arguments against even that form. Cause a person can manipulate anything if given the time. The truth comes down to the human eye...and how amazing it truly is. No matter how complex or sophisticated a camera can be...it'll never compete to the human eye. What I meant by natural was its a single shot. Processing in LR, PS or any other program is part of the package I think. It helps bring the photo to look as close to what you saw at that moment.

Thanks for the help again. :)
