Strange name for a stone but that is its name. The folk story goes that the stone represents the boundary between two areas and that farmers would bring milk there to sell. Seems weird because it is the highest point around but I suppose people came from different valleys. Joan must have gone there one winter and died in the snow. Eek. Another interesting feature is that there are indentations in the top of the stone to put coins. During the plague they were filled with vinegar to stop the spread of infection. Very topical. Anyway there is a great view right across Calderdale so its a top spot. Although not for Joan I suppose. Ted Hughes wrote a poem about her.
Such a fascinating story....poor Joan...a long way to climb for a jug of milk....it would be a jug or a churn in those days too, slopping all over! Beautiful walk though.
