Tree Peony and Fly by gardencat

Tree Peony and Fly

I decided to try to do the one subject 30 day challenge and went out this afternoon to try to find a subject that thought I could photograph for 30 days in a row without going bonkers. I decided to pick a tree peony plant that is in my garden, thinking it might have enough interest and change enough in the upcoming spring days to provide a number of different shots. I was planning to start with one of the dried seed heads left on here since last summer and then noticed one of them was holding this fly. I don't know enough about flies to be sure how, or where, they spend the winters or when they return in the spring so I don't know if this was a fly left over from last year or one just coming out this year.
Fabulous detail, particularly on his hairy posterior

Nicely detailed macro, it has probably over wintered somewhere.
