平和 (Heiwa)

Peace in Japanese is Heiwa.

Dove & Olive Branch

In Judaism and Christianity an olive branch is a sign for peace. The Torah and the Old Testament describe a story in which a dove was released by Noah after the Great Flood in order to find land. The dove came back carrying an olive branch in its beak, proof for Noah that the tumultuous waters of the Great Flood were receding, and humans could soon resume a normal life.
(Book of Genesis 8:11).

In Greek tradition, olive branches represent peace.

The plant was considered sacred to the ancient goddess of wisdom and defensive warfare, Athena.

Defeated Roman armies displayed olive branches as a white flag to indicate surrender.

The motif can also represent "hope for peace" and even a peace offering from one man to another, as in the phrase "extend an olive branch".

Amazing! I hoped someone would post up a picture of a dove with its olive branch. I grew up knowing this symbol but couldn't find a way to portray it here. You are so creative and have given so much trouble to finding your commentary. Peace to you.

Absolutely beautiful project of words and image! I don't want to offend, and i wouldn't say this except for the fact that joe mullin wants to use this design for a tattoo: The bird you have depicted is not a dove. it is a swallow which is used in tattoo art a lot because sailors used to get a swallow tattoo since swallows always return to the same nest each year, and was a talisman to ensure that the sailor found his way home. What makes a swallow different from a dove is the tail. swallows have a "scissor " tail and doves have a regular tail.

thanks rob!

thanks justin!

thanks gayle . joe was just kiddin' ... haha , re with your observation, i composed this as a piece, using photoshop. regarding with the bird, thanks for your (FYI) , the branch is not even an "OLIVE BRANCH" ...either, but as a composition, il stand for what ive created.... quite an eye you have there.... and i like it.... PEACE!
August 14th, 2010
Fun and creative! Like Gayle I immediately noticed the swallow too as I knew a lot of Navy guys in my stint in the service. Good to know Joe was kidding as it would be a bummer to get that ink'd :). You get kudos from me for creativity though! Nice job.
