I took a couple of young cousins to the zoo today and we visited the butterfly pavilion where I came across this owl butterfly, something new for me. Some interesting facts about owl butterflies...they are known for their huge eyespots, resembling the eyes of an owl. They are found in Central and South America, and Mexico, primarily in the rain forests. They are big butterflies and are not long-range fliers, going only a few feet at a time. Because of this, they are easy prey for birds. They usually fly at dusk when there are fewer predators about. Predators are discouraged by the eyespots, which resemble lizards or other amphibians. If attacked, they are more likely to be attacked at the outer edge of the wing, rather than the body.
@Weezilou Ha! That is exactly what I thought when I read the information online about these butterflies. Not sure if any predators can actually get into the butterfly enclosure but who knows? Thanks so much for commenting, Louise! :-)
What a stunning shot Gayle. I am even more in admiration after spending some time amidst beautiful butterflies on holiday and totally unable to catch them poised. The detail and clarity you have on this image is so very good.
